Treating and Preventing Adolescent Mental Health Disorders brings together a distinguished group of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists to provide a groundbreaking, evidence-based survey of treatments and preventions for adolescents with mental health disorders.
The book, the very first to disseminate the findings of the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands and administered with the assistance of the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) of the University of Pennsylvania, addresses the current state of our knowledge about various mental health disorders in the teenage years, a developmental period when behavior and the brain are still "plastic." Here, six commissions established by the Sunnylands Trust and APPC pool their expertise on adolescent anxiety, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, depression and bipolar disorders, eating disorders, and suicide in sections that thoroughly define each disorder, outline and assess available treatments, discuss prevention strategies, and suggest a research agenda based on what we know and don't yet know about these various conditions.
It was named the best book in clinical medicine published in 2005 by the Association of American Publishers, the principal trade association of the book publishing industry. The announcement was made at the Association's annual meeting in February 2006.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR TREATING AND PREVENTING ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS
Nationally, there has been a groundswell of interest in adolescent mental health disorders. There is a definite need for a great text on this topic. So it is wonderful to find the Annenberg Foundation Trust bringing together leaders in the field to produce a remarkable resource for all who treat adolescents, as well as those who help shape adolescent mental health policy. The authors describe what treatments work, and what preventive strategies hold promise. They define the relevant research questions for the future of the field. This book represents a significant accomplishment and should be read by all who study the mental health of adolescents.

This volume is extraordinarily valuable in synthesizing a great deal of information based predominantly on such tightly controlled studies.
JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (JAMA), October 26, 2005
The book won praise in a review published by the New England Journal of Medicine. "It is a clear and well-written book that should provide an evidence-based approach to the thoughtful care of adolescents," wrote reviewer Dr. Harsh K. Trivedi of Children's Hospital Boston, "and it should be a ready reference on the shelf of any physician caring for adolescents."
Three essential mental health volumes for adolescents are now available online in Spanish at www.CopeCareDeal.org. The books provide concise guides to bipolar disorder, depression, and eating disorders, and feature personal stories from teens who have coped with the illnesses.
